Aragona is a country in the Sicilian hinterland known above all for the maccalube and for having the highest emigration rate in Italy. The maccalube are mud volcanoes that in Roman times were even used for rheumatic and beauty treatments. Today a nature reserve has been established here but it has been closed to the public since 2014 , after the deaths of 2 children and their father, overwhelmed by a sudden eruption of mud more than 20 meters high. Despite the tragedy, it is hoped that the place will be made safe in the near future. Now let’s see what to see in Aragon.

The town doesn’t have much to offer from a tourist point of view apart from a nice square, if you are in the area you can still make a quick visit. Aragona was founded in 1606 by Count Naselli, who called it Aragona in honor of his mother Beatrice of Aragon. In the map below you will find the most beautiful monuments, namely Piazza Umberto I and the churches. To complete the visit of Aragon, a typical lunch is recommended in a beautiful farmhouse surrounded by nature, among almond trees and with a beautiful view of the surrounding hills, Il Parco del Mandorlo. There is also a play area for children and some animals such as rabbits, geese, goats and ponies.
