The Villa del Tellaro is located between Noto and Marzamemi , very close to the Vendicari reserve and was discovered in the 70s in the foundations of a 19th century farmhouse. It dates back to the 4th century AD and belonged to a wealthy Roman landowner family .

The villa of Tellaro is small, certainly not comparable to the Roman villa of Casale in Piazza Armerina, but its mosaics are very precious and have vivid colors.

The mosaics narrate some scenes from the Iliad and hunting, reminiscent of those in Piazza Armerina even with more stylized images. Admission is free and everything is well maintained and cared for, so one more reason to go if you are nearby. Just think that it took 30 years to open it to the public, you should go there just for this.

Top Secret Council

If you are traveling in a group the didactic farm of Tellaro , which is located near the Roman villa, is the one for you. For some years this association has decided to offer its customers lunches based on the recipes of ancient Rome. So in addition to observing the villas of the Romans, you can also experience how they ate!

“Thanks to a research that lasted two years – explains Sebastiano Adernò, president of the Iblee Excursions Association – we were able to recover recipes but above all the herbs used in Ancient Rome. With Marco Gavio Apicio’s De re coquinarie we had access to the world of recipes linked to the period in which the Villa and its mosaics are located. The complicated operation was to find what dishes were shared with and certain dishes were made. So we decided to grow them ourselves. Today the vegetable garden is very rich in different herbs, only by approaching you are enveloped by well-known scents and others less so. Even for wheat we started from scratch; at the beginning we took it to a mill in Rosolini; now, instead, in addition to cultivating it, we grind it ourselves. This is why we can offer from water with ginger to wine with black pepper and honey, from barley meatballs with patina or Cato’s libum, from Epityrum to Moretum bruschetta, to finish with Oplontis cassata ”.
