Morgantina is located near Aidone (Where there is a magnificent archaeological museum, housing many artifacts found here). Its origins they are very remote and start from the Bronze Age. It was in fact founded by a very ancient people, the Morgeti, led by their king Morgete, son of Italo (Small curiosity: it is thought that the name of the boot comes from Italo, who decided to call his kingdom Italy ).

The archaeological park

In Morgantina you can therefore admire the ruins of the buildings of this ancient people but you will also find traces of the Greek culture that followed that of the Morget i. Unfortunately, later the mercenaries in the service of the Romans destroyed Morgantina, which then fell into disrepair and was abandoned.

Morgantina is located in a very beautiful natural context, in fact around there is almost nothing that suggests the human presence. This makes it even more fascinating, allowing you to totally immerse yourself in the past. Important monuments are still visible, especially Greek ones, such as for example the agora, the theater (complete with a dedication to the god Denisius written on one of the theater’s bricks), the walls that separated the various workshops, i residential neighborhoods where wealthy citizens lived (You can still see the interior mosaic decorations) and much more.

Tip from Topsecretsicily: On this site you can book a guided tour of Morgantina with a visit to Enna and Caltagirone included.

Where to eat

Just a stone’s throw from the archaeological area a new restaurant has been opened, among other things the only one in the area, think that before there was nothing. It is a really nice place, well furnished, surrounded by nature and also well reviewed.

What to see in the surroundings

Definitely also the archaeological museum in Aidone , which preserves many finds from Morgantina and Piazza Armerina with its beautiful Roman villa del Casale.

Typical dishes of Enna and surroundings

Morgatina is located as mentioned in the province of Enna. Do you want to try the typical dishes in the Ennese area? Here I wrote an article on what to eat in Enna and surroundings.

Here instead you find the typical Sicilian dishes in general.
