Let’s go to the discovery of Mazarin and his castle. Mazzarino is a small town unknown to many, in the province of Caltanissetta. It was built under the Normans and the urban center experienced an important expansion between the 16th and 17th centuries.
The historic center is really very nice and picturesque. The main monuments are the churches, many of which were built With the beautiful baroque style. All you have to do is walk down Corso Vittorio Emanuele II to admire the town’s monuments.
Curiosity: In the month of June there is a historical seventeenth-century parade, with medieval costumes “The seventeenth century at the Carafa court”. During the parade the marriage between Prince Carlo Maria Carafa and Isabella d’Avalos is simulated, an event that really happened.
Mazzarino Castle
Mazzarino Castle, called by the inhabitants “U cannuni” (The cannon) due to the characteristic shape of its tower, is probably the most beautiful monument of Mazarin. The current structure dates back to the second half of the 15th century and was owned by the noble Branciforti family until 1812. These, however, lived in the castle only until the sixteenth century to move to the building in the center of the town, the current Palazzo Bartoli.
Of the castle only a tower and ruins remain , so there are no rooms to visit as in the case of the Manfredonico castle . In any case, a staircase allows you to climb the tower and enjoy a view of the town and the Nisso hills, a pure spectacle. You get to the castle by walking on a stone road, which is located on the outskirts, on the north side of the town.
At the foot of the castle there is also a very nice little theater. It was dug out of the rock in the 1980s to host small theatrical performances in this beautiful setting.
